Coloring Creatures (10/6)
Project/Unit description/Expedition:
students will use a variety of mediums (acrylic, pastel, watercolor) to color their fired sculptures. Students will create sculpture that will be installed in a class exhibition touching on site specific work, personal identity, and material exploration.
Essential Understanding.
Artists take elements of their own identity and transfer those ideas to create works of art.
Artists observe how other artists explore identity in sculpture.
Artists create a sculpture using a variety of building techniques.
Artists use mixed mediums to create a work of art.
Inquiry/Learning target.
Using their artwork students will be able to explain their artistic choices in design that express identity.
Given materials, students will used mixed mediums to create a work of art.

Art Focus.
Students focus on creating 3D sculpture using 2D plans. Students will be exploring the clay material testing its unforgiving limits. Students will incorporate color with mixed mediums on their sculpture. Following the project, they will be asked to articulate the design choices behind their work.
Literacy Focus.
We looked at 5 famous artists works and participated in a classroom discussion:
How does this painting make you feel?
How is the artist accomplishing that?
Does color contribute to the mood of this painting?
Students will also complete a reflective interview with each other upon completion of their sculpture.
